Marie Dunphy gave birth to a tiny baby girl on March 15, 1959. Marie named her new daughter, Joann. Almost immediately, the doctors realized that something was different about Joann. Joann Dunphy's condition was not readily diagnosable and Joann perplexed her doctors.
As Joann began to develop, an extreme curvature of the spine and various ailments lead doctors to believe that Joann's young life would be cut short. Marie Dunphy was told that her daughter would not celebrate her 5th birthday. Joann underwent various operations, hospital stays and extremely painful procedures.
A physician insisted that Marie Dunphy should place Joann in a children's ward for mentally retarded children. The doctor explained to Marie it was the only way that Marie would be able to live a normal life and not deal with the burdens of raising a "different" child. Marie absolutely refused to give her child away and fought long and hard to provide Joann with the most normal life possible.
Marie dedicated her entire life to properly raising Joann and because of Marie's devotion and care, a child that wasn't supposed to live beyond the age of five---lived to be 50 years old! A child that wasn't supposed to be able to verbally communicate---could hold a meaningful conversation with anyone. A child that wasn't supposed to be able to learn---graduated high school. A child that wasn't supposed to be able to walk---was able to completely care for herself.
Marie Dunphy is the maternal grandmother of the owner of Woo-Cat. Marie and Joann had a profound influence on the core values which Woo-Cat was built upon. The owner of our company was lucky enough to be raised by exceptional women. Marie Dunphy lived by simple principles and Woo-Cat has taken those principles and turned them into our guiding light!
